Victoria’s Alpine High Country has an incredible array of road cycling and mountain biking for all levels of fitness and interests. The perfect way to explore our region is on two wheels, enjoy the scenery, enjoy the fresh air and enjoy the adventure. If you looking for a challenge you may choose to tackle the ride to Mt Hotham or if you just out for a little fun and fitness you could ride along The Murray to the Mountains Rail Trail.
The Murray to Mountains Rail Trail
The Murray to Mountains Rail Trail an easy sealed trail that runs on the old railway line that use to travel from Wangaratta to Bright. This trail is ideal for all levels of cyclist. Take in the beautiful back drops of mountains, rural settings, rivers and streams and farm gates as you cycle from township to township along one of Australia's best cycling trails. Please note the following applies to rides listed below;
• The distance quoted is a return trip unless stated one way
The degree of difficulty;
• Beginner – low level of fitness or new to bike riding
• Intermediate – good level of fitness and confident on a bike
• Competent – high level of fitness and very confident on a bike
For your safety and for the preservation of our environment please stay on the cycle tracks and trails provide. Tracks and trails in the Alpine National Parks and Mt Buffalo National Park may not be suitable to ride during the cooler months.

Road Cycling
Victoria’s Alpine High Country offers some of the most challenging and exhilarating rides in Australia, often compared to famous rides in France. The Great Alpine Road windes its way from Wangaratta to Bright and over Mt Hotham to Omeo, right down to Gippsland. The Great Alpine Road has many discovery routes perfect for riding. Some popular mountainous rides;
• Bright to Mt Buffalo 54km undulating to steep - competent
• Bright over Tawonga Gap to Mt Beauty 53km undulating to steep - competent
• Mt Beauty to Falls Creek 46km undulating to steep – competent
• Bright to Mt Hotham 94km undulating to steep - competent
• Myrtleford to Lake Buffalo 42km flat to undulating - intermediate
• Mt Beauty to Dederang 39km (one way) flat to undulating – intermediate

• Alpine Audax Classic – Australia Day weekend, January
• SP Ausnet – Tour of Bright – early December
• Alpine Delight (Audax Cycling Event) – mid November
• Bright Bewitched and Bedazzled – early November
Mountain Biking
For all those keen mountain bikers the region has an endless amount of tracks in both valleys. From novice to expert, you will find a track to challenge you.
• Mt Beauty Pondage 4km flat – beginner
• Bright to Porepunkah 12km flat - beginner
• Bright to Wandiligong 13km flat - intermediate
• Hotham to Dinner Plain 11km undulating to steep - intermediate
• Big Hill Downhill Loop (Mt Beauty) 17.6km steep - competent
• Falls Creek to Wallace Hut 7.9km undulating - intermediate
• East Ovens River Ride (Harrietville) 7km flat with river crossings - intermediate

• Bright 6 Hour Mountain Bike Event – mid November
• Big Hill Downhill Mountain Bike Race – mid May (timing may change due to other MTB events)
• Mitta Mitta to Mt Beauty Mountain Bike Challenge – late October
